The South Australian Liquor Store Association was founded in 1980 by Elton Johnson who was the inspiration for what 25 years later is still the primary organisation within the State for representing packaged liquor license merchants with the disparate issues that exist.
In 1993 Martin Baily became President of the Association and for a decade oversaw the rapid expansion of the organisation. He was particularly active in attempting to minimise the encroachment of Government, both at State and National level, who viewed the industry as a cash cow to be increasingly milked.
The current President, Fred Hamood, took over the reins in 2003 and has continued to successfully develop and expand the policies enunciated during the nineties.
The Association and the industry faces many difficulties today but the general view taken by all members is that the efficient and creative operators will continue to survive and indeed flourish in the existing economic climate.
As part of the strategy to ameliorate damage to our industry, the Association is active on many fronts ranging from health issues, education and training, underage and binge drinking and not least the difficulties forced upon us by the policies of the National Competition Council. We are actively engaged and members of the working party set up by the State Government to consider the impact of any legislative changes to the Liquor Licensing Act 1997 at present being considered. Over the past three years we have presented 4 major submissions to the State Government outlining our views and recommendations.
If you would like more information about the Association’s activities please contact us at the numbers below and we will do our best to assist.
